Beginner FPV Starter Kit Recommendations

WARNING

FPV is a high entry-barrier hobby — it requires basic knowledge and piloting skills. This should not be ignored. Without proper understanding and practice, you can easily lose hundreds of euros right at the beginning.

Stage 1

Start by purchasing a radio transmitter (also called controller, remote, or “radio”). For simplicity, choose the ELRS 2.4GHz protocol. The best brands are Radiomaster, followed by Jumper.

Below are two simple and solid options on the market: one small and compact, the other larger and more powerful (with plenty of headroom). They come in different color and material variations. The key point when buying is that it must explicitly support ELRS 2.4GHz (FCC or LBT does not matter). These controllers are also liquid (easy to resell) if you decide the hobby is not for you.

Connect it to a PC and start training in a simulator. Most simulators are available on Steam. The most popular ones:

  • Liftoff
  • Liftoff Microdrones
  • Tryp
  • Uncrashed
  • DRL

It is recommended to spend 5–10 hours in a simulator before moving to real drones. In parallel, learn the basics: drone components, video and radio systems, drone sizes, battery types and sizes, and how to charge and store them.

Stage 2

Next, buy a tiny whoop and an analog FPV headset. This is the cheapest and most crash-resistant class of drones. You can fly indoors and outdoors in calm weather. There are even competitions in this category. In Limassol, there is also a Whoop Club where we train and fly these drones.

Top drones:

  • BetaFPV Air 65
  • BetaFPV Air 75
  • Happymodel Mobula 6 2024
  • Happymodel Mobula 7
  • HummingBird V3 Analog

Buy from these sites (ordered by convenience for shipping to Cyprus):

Batteries are required for the drone. Choose according to the size and connector type specified in the product description. Small batteries (Air 65, Mobula 6, HummingBird V3) — 260–300mAh Larger ones — 450–550mAh

Connector types:

  • BT2.0 (compatible with A30)
  • PH2.0 (not recommended)

Batteries are harder to find in Cyprus. Options include:

You also need a charger. A top universal charger suitable for all whoop batteries:

Analog headset To fly FPV you need goggles or a headset. Good analog goggles are currently expensive and often not worth it.

Headsets can be found on the same sites above, though stock is often limited. Consider:

  • BetaFPV VR03
  • Eachine EV800D
  • EMAX 5 Transporter 2
  • IFlight Analog FPV
